Why does my Audi 80 make a grinding noise when I start it?

I recently purchased a used Audi 80 and have noticed that when I start it up, there is a loud grinding noise that lasts for a few seconds before going away. Is this something I should be concerned about?

It is likely that the noise is coming from the starter. This could indicate that the starter is failing or that there is an issue with the flywheel. I recommend taking your car to a mechanic to have it checked out before the issue worsens.

I had a similar issue with my Audi 80 and it was due to a faulty alternator. It's a good idea to have a mechanic check the alternator and replace it if necessary.

This could also be caused by a worn out or loose accessory drive belt. I suggest having the belt inspected and replaced if needed.
