What should I do if my Audi 80's engine overheats?

I've noticed that the temperature gauge on my Audi 80 is reaching the red zone and the engine is making strange noises. What steps should I take to avoid serious damage to my car?

First, pull over to a safe location and turn off the engine immediately. Let the car cool down for at least 30 minutes before opening the hood. In the meantime, check the coolant level and make sure it's not empty. If it is, fill it up with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water.

If the coolant level is fine, it's possible that your Audi 80's thermostat is stuck or the water pump is failing. In this case, it's best to call a mechanic and have them take a look. Driving with an overheating engine can cause serious damage.
