What Is the Purpose of the Audi 80's Lambda Sensor?

I've noticed that my Audi 80 has a lambda sensor, but I'm not sure what its function is. Can anyone explain it to me?

The lambda sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen in the exhaust of your Audi 80. This information is used by the engine control unit to adjust the air-fuel ratio for optimal performance and emissions control.
