What is the function of the coolant temperature sensor in an Audi 80?

I've noticed that my Audi 80 has been running hotter than usual and I suspect it may be due to a malfunctioning coolant temperature sensor. Can someone explain in detail what this sensor does and how it affects the engine?

The coolant temperature sensor in an Audi 80 is responsible for measuring the temperature of the engine coolant and sending this information to the engine control unit. It plays a crucial role in ensuring proper engine function and preventing overheating.

If your coolant temperature sensor is not working correctly, it can cause incorrect temperature readings to be sent to the engine control unit. This can result in a number of issues such as poor fuel economy, rough idling, and engine misfires.

You can easily check if your coolant temperature sensor is working by using a multimeter to test the resistance of the sensor. If the resistance values are outside of the recommended range, then it is likely that the sensor needs to be replaced.
