What does the Audi A1's Electronic Stabilization Program do?

I'm buying a new Audi A1 and I'm curious about the Electronic Stabilization Program. Can you explain what it does and how it works?

The Electronic Stabilization Program, or ESP, helps to keep your vehicle stable and on the road in slippery or unstable road conditions. It uses sensors to detect when the wheels are losing grip and automatically applies the brakes or reduces engine power to help prevent skidding.

My advice is to always keep your ESP engaged, even if you feel like you're a confident driver. The system can react much faster than you can and can greatly improve your safety on the road.
