How to recognize when it's time to replace the brakes on an Audi 80?

I've noticed that my Audi 80's braking distance has increased and the brakes make a high-pitched noise when I press down on them. How can I tell if it's time to replace the brakes or if it's just normal wear and tear?

First, check the thickness of the brake pads. If they are less than 3mm, it's time to replace them.

You can also do a visual inspection of the brake rotors. If they have deep grooves or are discolored, it's a sign that they need to be replaced.

Another way to tell is by listening to the brake pads. If you hear a high-pitched screeching noise, it's a sign that the pads are worn down.
