Why is the engine of my Audi 80 making a knocking noise?

I have noticed a slight knocking noise coming from the engine of my Audi 80. It happens more frequently when the car is idling or at low speeds. I have checked the oil levels and they seem fine. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
