Why does the Audi A1 have a shorter wheelbase than the A3?

I'm considering buying the Audi A1 but I'm curious why it has a shorter wheelbase compared to the A3. Will it affect the handling or overall driving experience?

The Audi A1 is designed to be a compact car which makes it more agile and easier to navigate in tight spaces. The shorter wheelbase also results in a shorter turning radius, making it easier to maneuver in city driving. However, this could also affect the stability and ride comfort at high speeds. If you prioritize city driving and agility, the A1 may be a better choice. However, for longer trips and highway driving, the A3's longer wheelbase may be more suitable.

The shorter wheelbase of the Audi A1 is due to its platform being shared with the Volkswagen Polo. By using the same platform, Audi is able to save cost and also create a smaller and more affordable car compared to the A3. This does impact the rear legroom and trunk space, which may be a consideration for taller passengers or those who carry a lot of cargo. However, the A1 is still a well-engineered and high-quality car that can provide a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.
