Why does my Audi A3 make a whirring sound when turning?

I've noticed that my Audi A3 makes a faint whirring sound when I turn the steering wheel, especially at low speeds. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

The most likely cause of this noise is a worn out power steering pump. You should have it checked and replaced if necessary by a mechanic.
