Why does my Audi 80's engine knock when I start it in cold weather?

Every time I start my Audi 80 in cold weather, the engine makes a loud knocking noise for a few seconds before it goes, what could be the cause of this?

It is most likely due to oil viscosity in colder temperatures, causing the oil to not lubricate the engine components as effectively. Consider using a thinner oil in the winter or investing in an engine block heater.
