Why does my Audi 80's engine keep shutting off while idling?

I have an Audi 80 with 100,000 miles on it. Recently, while idling at a stoplight, the engine suddenly shuts off and then restarts. It happens multiple times while driving, but it never fully turns off when I'm in gear or driving. Is this a sign of a major issue?

It is most likely a problem with the idle air control valve. This valve controls the amount of air going into the engine when it is idling. If it is malfunctioning, it can cause the engine to shut off. It is important to get this fixed as it can lead to other engine issues.

Another potential issue could be a clogged fuel filter. A clogged filter can cause a decrease in fuel flow, leading to the engine shutting off. It is recommended to replace the fuel filter every 30,000 miles to prevent this issue.

Check your spark plugs and ignition coils. If these are worn out or malfunctioning, it can cause the engine to shut off while idling. It may be time for a tune-up to replace these components.
