Why are MDIs used in Audi cars?

I am having trouble understanding why Audi uses Multiple Diagnostic Index (MDI) instead of OBD-II or other protocols in their cars. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Audi has been using MDIs for years and it has proven to be reliable and efficient for their purposes.
