What is the purpose of the Audi A3's cylinder on demand system?

I have heard that the Audi A3 has a cylinder on demand system, but I am not sure what it does or why it is necessary. Can someone explain?

The cylinder on demand system in the Audi A3 is designed to improve fuel efficiency by deactivating cylinders when the car is not under heavy load. This reduces the number of cylinders being used and, therefore, the amount of fuel consumed.
