What is the purpose of the Audi A1's cylinder on demand (COD) technology?

I've noticed that my Audi A1 has a cylinder on demand feature. Can someone explain what it does and how it benefits my car?

The cylinder on demand technology in Audi A1 allows for better fuel efficiency by deactivating cylinders when not needed. For example, if you're driving on the highway at a constant speed, only half of your cylinders will be active, reducing fuel consumption.
