What is the function of the idle control valve on an Audi 80?

I've noticed my Audi 80's idle can be a little erratic at times. I've read online that the idle control valve may be the cause. Can anyone explain what this part does and how it affects the engine's idle?

A

The idle control valve, also known as the idle air control valve, is responsible for regulating the amount of air that flows into the engine when your foot is off the accelerator pedal. This helps maintain a steady and smooth idle.

If your idle control valve is malfunctioning, it can result in a higher or lower idle than normal, as well as stalling or rough idle. It's important to have it checked by a mechanic if you suspect it's causing issues.
