What is the difference between a turbocharged engine and a supercharged engine?

I am considering purchasing an Audi A3 and am wondering what the main differences are between a turbocharged engine and a supercharged engine. Are there any benefits to one over the other?

A

A turbocharged engine uses exhaust gases to power a turbine, which then compresses the air intake and increases power. On the other hand, a supercharged engine uses a belt-driven compressor to increase air intake and power. Both have their advantages, such as a turbocharged engine being more efficient and a supercharged engine providing instant power.
