How to troubleshoot a 'Check Engine' light on an Audi A6?

I recently purchased a used Audi A6 and the 'Check Engine' light came on. I'm not very familiar with cars and was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue.

First, don't panic! The 'Check Engine' light can indicate a variety of issues, some minor and some major. The best thing to do is to use an OBD-II scanner to read the error codes and see what the issue might be. You can usually find these scanners at auto parts stores or online.

If you're not comfortable using an OBD-II scanner, you can always take your Audi A6 to a trusted mechanic who has the necessary equipment to diagnose the issue. They will be able to tell you the specific problem and give you a quote for repairs.

Another possible solution is to check your gas cap. Sometimes a loose or faulty gas cap can trigger the 'Check Engine' light. Make sure the cap is tightened properly and see if that solves the issue before taking it to a mechanic.
