How do I know when to replace my Audi brakes?

I just bought a used Audi and I'm not sure when the brakes were last changed. How can I tell if they need to be replaced?

As a general rule, it's recommended to replace your brakes every 50,000 miles or once every 3 years, whichever comes first.
