Why is my Audi A4 making a knocking noise when I accelerate?

I recently purchased a used Audi A4 and noticed that it makes a knocking noise when I accelerate. It seems to be coming from the engine but I'm not sure what could be causing it. What could be the problem and how can I fix it?
