I've noticed some unusual noises coming from my engine and I suspect it may be due to a worn timing belt. How can I replace it myself without causing any damage to my car?
Reply- Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing any components that may be in your way, such as the airbox or the engine cover.
- Next, loosen the tensioner pulley and remove the old timing belt. Make sure to mark the position of your camshaft and crankshaft before removing the belt, as this will help you align them correctly when installing the new one.
- Before installing the new timing belt, check for any signs of wear on the tensioner and idler pulleys. If they seem worn, it’s best to replace them as well.
- Install the new timing belt by aligning the marks on your camshaft and crankshaft with the corresponding marks on the engine block. Then, adjust the tensioner to the correct setting and tighten all bolts.
- Once everything is in place, rotate the engine by hand a couple of times to make sure the belt is properly aligned and there are no obstructions. Finally, reconnect the battery and start your car to test the new belt.
